Chic, Cheap and Safe:How To Clean Up Your Make Up Act!

It's time to clean up your make up act! No, we don't mean finally getting around to wiping out all the gunky lipstick and eye pencil melted to the inside of your make up bag -although that wouldn't be a bad idea either.(Your mother told us to write that!)
We're talking about a growing movement towards safer cosmetics - products that contain fewer of the chemicals that many environmental experts now say could be very bad for our health - including having links to infertility, auto immune diseases, even breast and ovarian cancer.
And while the US has yet to follow the lead of European nations by banning a number of these questionable ingredients from lipstick, foundation, skin care and more, a new environmental initiative is hoping to fill in the gap. Known as the Compact For Safe Cosmetics, it provides companies the opportunity to make a voluntary pledge to follow the European Union's lead by eliminating the use of these same key chemicals in their products.
To date, some 600 companies have signed the pledge, and made the promise, giving consumers a wide range of choices among products that may possibly be safer to use. These include such major companies as Belli Cosmetics, and Motherlove (for pregnant women), Burt's Bees, Aubrey Organics, Afterglow Cosmetics and many more.
In addition, the science gals we talked to offered up these 7 ways that every woman can clean up her act - by creating a safe, yet chic personal make up bag. Here's what you can do!
1. When choosing personal care products remember that simpler is better. This means not only actively looking for products with fewer chemical ingredients (choose soap instead of shower gel, or moisturizers without fragrance), but also using fewer products overall.
2. Think about how necessary a product is before you use it – for example, bubble bath for your baby, or for yourself. If you can do without it – do without it.
3.Use your nose as a guide: If a product has a chemical-like odor think twice about using it- or where you will apply it.
4. Buy from companies that demonstrate recognition of the problems –and a concern to make things better. Think twice about purchasing from a company that sends the message that "little bit of poison" won't harm you.
5. Visit product websites and search out the full monty on ingredients – many of them will offer more disclosure there then on the label. If you still want to know more email them and ask. Visit www.CosmeticsDataBase.com for an up-to-date cross reference of over 22,000 cosmetics and a rating of their chemical ingredients.
6. Whenever possible seek out products from companies that have signed the "Compact for Safe Cosmetics" pledge .
7. Get a FREE CD report from Vassar College on environmental links to breast cancer – including the role of cosmetics and personal care product.

Budget Beauty Substitutions: What To Use When You Run Out!

by CountryDutchess.com
Okay so you have to make that choice: Do I buy make-up? Do I pay the rent? And in today's world, sometimes, in fact, you can't swing either one .

And although we love you like crazy, we can't really help you on the rent part. :(

But ... we can tell you what to do when you just need to look fabulous...on a not-so-fabulous budget!

What's the secret? It's called Budget Beauty Substitution - the clever art of "making do" with products you already have to create the products you need. In fact, by adding just a little bit of creative thinking, you'll not only figure out to get what you need from what you have, you'll also find a ton of new ways to use everything in that overloaded bathroom vanity drawer
( Okay, we peeked!).

If fact, you might end up saving so much money, you'll be able to buy those too fabulous new shoes you've been coveting. Or, pay the rent - up to you entirely!

To help get you thinking in the right direction, here are a handful of Budget Beauty Substitutions that will start saving you money instantly!

Cheap Chic Lipstick: Scape off a few grains of powder blush , combine with a dab of petroleum jelly and voila - lipstick! For gloss use less powder, more jelly.

Cheap Chic Foundation: Combine a tiny dab of concealer with your favorite moisturizer.

Cheap Chic Make Up Remover: Try a dab of olive oil on a cotton ball - or pop open a capsule of vitamin E and apply direct to skin. For travel try unscented baby wipes - make-up off in one swipe!

Cheap Chic Toothpaste: Combine baking soda with water.

Cheap Chic Eyelash Curler: Heat a spoon for 5 seconds with a hairdryer set on medium, then press lashes against the back of the warm (Not HOT) spoon. Be sure to touch it to the back of your hand before you put it near your eye.

Cheap Chic Hair Control : Lightly wipe any brand of cling free dryer sheet over your hair to cut static electricity and offer up a great shine!

Cheap Chic Nail File: Use the abrasive end of a book of matches ( where you strike it).

Cheap Chic Nail Polish Extender: Try a drop of olive oil to rejuvenate the sticky dried polish and get a few more manicures before the bottle's done!

Chocolate: The New Botox?

By CountryDutchess.com

Could chocolate be the new botox? It just might be so!

We know that eating it makes us feel good, thanks to natural chemicals that work on receptors in the brain that, once stimulated can increase feelings of well being.

Now scientists have found that these same “feel good” receptors are also present in hair follicles and nerve cells in the skin - and when stimulated by natural chemicals found in chocolate not only improve our mood, but have a muscle relaxing effect that may be similar to Botox. In one study a cocoa-based skin cream was applied twice daily for 28 days to the skin around the eye area - with a relaxation of wrinkles observed in 95 % of the test subjects.

Expect to see chocolate – or more precisely cocoa – cropping up in everything from skin care to spa-quality body care relaxation products in 2009.

Victoria's Real Secret: Bras May Be Toxic

As reports begin surfacing nationwide concerning toxic skin reactions to a popular line of sexy lingerie, women need to be on the lookout for symptoms that could be more than just annoying. Here's what you need to know. -- by Colette Bouchez --

If you're thinking of boosting your sex appeal with a racy Victoria Secret bra there's something you should know: You just might end up with more attention than you bargained for.

The reason: Some women are reporting swollen, itchy, red, blistering breasts after wearing some styles from this popular lingerie line.

According to a report featured yesterday on WABC News in New York City, at least one of those women - 37 year old Ohio resident Victoria Ritter - is suing the sexy lingerie manufacturer for what she described as " Welts...very red, hot to the touch, extremely inflamed, blistery", which she says itched profusely.

Ritter told WABC News reporter Tappy Phillips she developed the rash after wearing the Angels Secret Embrace and Very Sexy Extreme Me Push-Up bras. Both styles are sold in Victoria Secret stores nationwide, in their mail order catalog, and at their website online.

But if you think Ritter's experience was an isolated one, guess again. The Internet is slowly filling up with similar claims from other Victoria Secret lingerie wearers nationwide - many of their stories detailed on the website MedHelp.com. All seem to describe a similar reaction - and similar symptoms - an issue which Ritter says she hopes will become the basis of a class action suit.

In fact, WABC News is reporting that the class action suit has already been filed, and it's waiting on a judge's decision, which is not expected until next May.
The Mysterious Toxic Lingerie Brew

While no one is certain what's causing the problem with the sexy bras, the Ohio law firm representing Ritter claims to have done their own testing and pinpointed the source as formaldehyde - a highly toxic chemical they say was found embedded in the cloth of the lingerie.

Ritter says her doctor diagnosed her rash as a type of allergy and that it could have been caused by exposure to this chemical.

While Victoria's Secret does acknowledge that a small number of women do have reactiosn to their lingerie, they also claim there is no formaldehyde in their bras..

That said, even if there was, it's not the eye-popping "gasp" you might think. Indeed, this nasty chemical initially developed to preserve lab specimens ( remember all those frogs you cut up in biology class - they were floating in formaldehyde) is frequently used as a preservative in some cosmetic and skin care products and it's a component of many nail polishes.

Formaldehyde is also used to make certain permanent press fabrics, including some sheets and pillow cases - one reason why many companies suggest consumers wash bedding before sleeping on it.

Formaldehyde is also a particularly nasty component of some brands of MDF
( medium density fiberboard) - a building material used in making low-end "wood look" furniture pieces, and often used as a mainstay on popular do-it-yourself and home makeover shows. Tests show that off gassing of formaldehyde fumes can emanate from some MDF products for up to three years - and that those fumes may be linked to an increase in asthma and other respiratory disorders, and possibly play a role in cancer.

I once bought a "fake wood" bookcase and ended up with burning eyes and skin just from being in the same room with the furniture for a few hours.

That said, I wouldn't be so quick to implicate formaldehyde as the main cause of the sexy rashes.

The reason? Medical literature is filled with similar sounding symptoms stemming from allergies caused by other chemicals used in the making of cloth - particularly cheap dyes often used to color fabrics. While I don't know if these particular bras were made outside of the United States, but if they were it's important to note that some countries don't have the kind of strict regulations regarding what can be used to color a fabric as we do here in the US.

There are also much less stringent guidelines regarding rinsing the fabrics after they are dyed- and some countries tend to skip this step altogether. In fact, several years ago a good friend of mine developed a similar itchy, red rash body-wide that her doctor just couldn't seem to pin down - until she told me she had recently purchased a brightly colored comforter cover made outside the US.

When she brought it to the attention of her doctor, the mystery was solved: My friends rash was indeed linked to the comforter cover - and the dyes used to color it.

So whether or not formaldehyde, fabric dye or some other factor entirely turns out to be the culprit in the sexy lingerie caper, no one can say just yet.

At the same time, a rash is a rash is a rash - and an itch that you just can't scratch is anything but sexy, no matter the underlying cause.

So what's a girl to do in the meantime? Well you could take a page from the feminist movement of the 1970's and simply go braless.

Or, you could simply switch over to good old Playtex for a while. It might not be worn by a gorgeous super model ...but trust me, your "girls" will never know the difference.

Match Your Moisturizer To Your Skin Type

by Colette Bouchez

Finding the perfect moisturizer is often a matter of personal choice. The scent, the consistency even the price are often the parameters by which we make our final choice.

That said you can narrow down the playing field and get better at finding the right product for your skin type if you follow a few simple guidelines.

According to Dr. Doris Day, a dermatologist from NYU-Langone Medical Center, and author of "You Don't Need A Face Lift", here's a few skin-type specific suggestions that can help.

1. For Combination Skin: Your best ingredients include botanicals, hyaluronic acid, vitamins A, C and B, and pentapeptides.

2. For Sensitive Skin: Look for ingredients like shea butter, hyaluronic acid, or pentapeptide which offer moisture without irritation.

3. For Oily And Acne-Prone Skin: Check the label for ingredients like dimethicone, salicyic acid, tea tree oil and vitamins A and C. You want to moisturizer without adding extra oil or clogging pores.

What else do you need to know? Excess oil doesn't mean you don't need moisture. A good moisturizer will help capture and trap water in skin cells, and not add a greasy layer of oil to your skin.
