Wondering if it's safe to dye hair "down there" - in your veritable "V" Zone?
The good news: It is safe to dye pubic hair, but you should know that many doctors advise that it be done by a professional and not on your own. Among the risks is burning the delicate skin around the V zone area - particularly since it is more sensitive than the skin on your scalp.
Prevention magazine's womens health advisor Mary Jane Minkin, MD says if you do try it on your own, start with a very small amount of dye in one tiny area of hair, making sure it doesn't burn or irritate skin or cause an allergic reaction.
She also advises using the most gentle coloring products you can find - and to leave bleaching or dramatic color changes to the professionals. Many salons specializing in bikini waxing also do pubic hair coloring.
If you do attempt to do it on your own - it's definitely at your own risk, and not something we would advise. That said, if you try it anyway here are a few tips that can help minimize problems.
1. Always patch test the dye first on your inner arm for at least 24 hours before coloring.
2. For the most precise application try a mascara wand as an applicator - but make sure you thoroughly wash out all traces of mascara product on it before dipping it in the hair dye.
3. Limit your coloring to pubic hair directly on top - and don't try to color anything inside your inner labia.
4 . Cover the inner skin of your genitals with a small amount of Vaseline before you start the coloring procedure - this will help minimize skin irritation from any dye that spills over. Don't put the Vaseline on the hairs your want to dye - it will keep them from absorbing color.
5. Apply the dye to the hair only and never rub it in to skin.
6. Wash off the dye in the shower - suds up with your soap and rinse very thoroughly.
Most recently, products have been developed specifically for dying pubic hair. Among the most popular is Gigi Colour Down Under...Natural Brunette. It's available in 6 natural shades including brunette.
You can also try hair colors by Aubrey such as Aubrey Organics Color Me Natural, 100% Natural Permanent Hair Color, Dark Brown, 4 oz (115 g) by ClubNatural. It also comes in a variety of colors.
